Knowledge management (KM) is an emerging field of specialization in a lot of professions


Knowledge economy continues to take shape in the 21st century, the factors of production are shifting from physical financial capital to intellectual capital. In this environment, the success of organizations will depend on their ability to generate, adopt and diffuse knowledge –– to become knowledge organizations.

KM promotes a collaborative and integrative approach to the creation, capture, organization, access and use of information assets, including the tacit, uncaptured knowledge of people.

Knowledge comes in many forms. Some professionals work with the IT and organization facet, focusing on organization of knowledge, knowledge structures and architectures. Others focus on the knowledge that comes from within people. These professionals work with people to promote engagement across departments in an effort to facilitate knowledge sharing among colleagues. Chief knowledge officers are the executives who define the strategies for an organization based on organizational culture, knowledge assets, business processes and organizational goals.

Information science has played a limited role in providing fresh insights into the emerging interdisciplinary discourse of knowledge management. There are opportunities and challenges posed by the new discourse. An analysis of the knowledge management literature within information science journals shows a need for a wider academic perspective and a more philosophically grounded one. As the current knowledge management discourse is fragmented, we propose an integrative, interdisciplinary framework that would be useful for resituating knowledge management among scholars and practitioners.

There is no doubt that the knowledge economy is a reality and research on the field of Knowledge Management and associated topics are still scares and organizations are finding it hard to find expertise in the field. The research on Knowledge Management will focus on different aspects of Knowledge Management (KM) as a field of study as well as its application in businesses/enterprises/organizations.

Knowledge management is the deliberate and systematic coordination of an organization's people, technology, processes, and organizational structure in order to add value through reuse and innovation. This coordination is achieved through creating, sharing, and applying knowledge as well as through feeding the valuable lessons learned and best practices into corporate memory in order to foster continued organizational learning.

KM draws upon a vast number of diverse fields such as organizational science, cognitive science, linguistics and computional linguistics, information technologies such as knowledge-based systems, document and information management, electronic performance support systems, database technologies, LIS, technical writing and journalism, anthropology and sociology, education and training, storytelling and communication studies, collaborative technologies, etc.
