Geology Earth Science Environmental Physical Geology Notes Exams

Geology (from the Greek γῆ, gē, i.e. "earth" and -λoγία, -logia, i.e. "study of, discourse") is an earth science comprising the study of solid Earth, the rocks of which it is composed, and the processes by which they change.
Geology is the study of the Earth, the materials of which it is made, the structure of those materials, and the processes acting upon them. It includes the study of organisms that have inhabited our planet. An important part of geology is the study of how Earth’s materials, structures, processes and organisms have changed over time.

Geology is the science of the Earth --and focuses on the Earth's physical makeup, its history, and how it works. Geology students make use of the whole Earth as their field area, from the Arctic to Antarctic, from the Earth’s core to the edge of our atmosphere. Geologists also explore the solar system, as we use the knowledge of our own planet to understand those worlds we discover.

The earth is our home. The development of human civilization as we know it goes hand in hand with how we have used and continue to reshape the planet. This course will introduce the basic knowledge of geology and methods of engineering geology to help people protect and utilize our earth more effectively.

Geology and Geological Engineering are two of the most important basic subjects that underpin engineering specialties, such as hydraulic engineering, geotechnical engineering and geological engineering. Engineering professionals will find this course particularly interesting and useful, but anyone with an interest in learning how to protect and continue to reshape our planet is welcome to enroll!

Geology is the study of the earth (geo = earth, ology = study of). This is a very simple definition for something so complex. Geology involves studying the materials that make up the earth, the features and structures found on Earth as well as the processes that act upon them. Geology also deals with the study of the history of all life that's ever lived on or is living on the earth. Studying how life and our planet have changed over time is an important part of geology.

A geologist studies earth processes such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and volcanic eruptions to survey land and draw up safe building plans. When geologists investigate earth materials, not only do they investigate metals and minerals, but they also look into oil, natural gas, water and methods to extract these.

Why study geology ?
Are you interested in global change, not just during historical time, but over the whole lifetime of the Earth? Are you interested in the origin and development of our landscape and in how plate tectonics control the surface features of the Earth such as earthquakes and volcanoes? Do you wonder how we can manage our natural resources more sustainably?

Geologists are scientific detectives who try to reveal the past and the future of the Earth. Geology attracts people who wish to study the dynamics of the Earth we live on, its resources, and the most economic and sustainable way to use these resources.

Students who enjoy working outdoors, have a good scientific background, and are interested in understanding how the world around them works will find this field of earth sciences a rewarding area of study.

Examples of positions after the studies (possible jobs)
  • Engineering geologist
  • Geochemist
  • Geophysicist/field seismologist
  • Geoscientist
  • Hydrogeologist
  • Seismic interpreter
  • Mudlogger
  • Wellsite geologist
  • Drilling engineer
  • Environmental consultant
  • Geophysical data processor
  • Minerals surveyor
